Manufacturer’s Rebate
Life is easy and numb sometimes, if you let your body grow cold in these little pools of deceitful tranquility. You make mistakes and bad decisions, but they appear to drop to the bottom of your pool. You take so much for granted, and start to question who is in control – if anyone. And when no one is at the helm, that’s when the shoals seem to get deeper, right? Your little pool of dead weight grows shallow, but there is still plenty to lap up like a puppy, blissfully unaware.
Your view of larger pools of warmer waters is withdrawn and then distracted by the little pebbles trickling at your back. Pebbles? Where are they coming from? I know I’ve been lackadaisical, and I’ve been throwing it in Your face. I even asked where the consequences were, how could I be getting off without a scratch? So I lose myself when I call back to the hillside with “Is that all I get? Pebbles!?”
Sometimes the pebbles stop, sometimes they spill more heavily and fill the pool, allowing only the spaces between them for the numbing water. Still, it seems better than raising a sail and getting off this damn island. I hate this place, why would I dream of staying? Oh but it comes to me – all rushing at once. This is the consequence.
My small pebbles begin to cascade around my legs while I try to peer up the hill and see who or what is kicking them down at me. And there I am – standing at the top, watching myself drown in a broken pond, and I push the keystone that creates the avalanche. Too late to run now as the boulders come to crush me. The pebbles like sand now to the thundering crack of the rock and its brothers who rain down, and keep me.
