Epiphany

November 27, 2007 by · Leave a Comment

I had this moment this morning where previous moments have been building. There is this surge of excitement within me and so many things seem so clear. Of course this clarity is focused and tunnel-like, but that’s just fine. I feel as if all the things in my life, all my talents (no matter how trivial) have been in preparation for this one thing. I have no other word for this feeling than: “epiphany”.

Due to the nature of my regular business, I am always looking for catchy names for new products. Something that is easily branded and simple to keep on the tip of your tongue. Words like Roomba, Google, Vista, etc. Each one of these in my opinion are great names. Roomba sounds like the name of a dance, but also characterize the device’s purpose (to clean a room). Google doesn’t necessarily roll off the tongue as well, but its wide spread use make it a household name and compensate for that double consonant sound. Vista, although from what I understand is a crappy product, has a majestic feel and the word just feels home-y.

So what does this have to do with my epiphany? Well I came up with a name that I liked not too long ago, and thought that like any other product/project, I could apply the name to this one. The dilemma is that upon further examination of the word, it has an almost maleficent connotation. Which makes me think maybe that’s a good sign that my epiphany is not something I should pursue. Or, maybe I should just change the name – nothing is final of course.

The word I came up with (but of course did not create) is Iago. I see now also that there are no domain names available for this one, and it is the villain in the play by Shakespeare, Othello. It is also the name of the parrot henchman in Aladdin. Why would I want to name something I am passionate about after someone associated with treachery and possibly my own downfall? That’s right, I wouldn’t!

Okay, more on this later – I have to get back to work.
