Brand Loyalty

I like movies based on comic books and video games, especially if I have read the comics before or played the games. I was a huge comic book reader back when I was a teenager and have always loved playing video games, at least with a partial thumb on the pulse of the video game industry. My other thumbs were busy “mashing buttons” as the players in the South call it, defeating level Bosses and obtaining the power ups necessary to trick out whatever weapon I was using.
Many of the movies made have truly sucked. Blood Rayne for instance. Of course I never played the game, though it looked cool from the trailers I saw. The movie sucked about as much as a bad vampire movie can suck. It literally looked as if the movie was shot at two different times. One time with a budget, and one time after that budget was raped of all its full dollars – special effects guys, actors and writers were all paid with nickels.
I read today that the new Iron Man movie that will be coming out next will not have Terrence Howard reprising his role as Tony Stark’s bestest buddy. They are tapping Don Cheadle instead to play the War Machine, Iron Man’s silver companion designed to, well, be a machine of war I guess. This ticks me WAY off! If you and I have ever sat down and talked about movies, then you already know that I HATE it when they change the guy playing the guy in the movie about the guy that I like. You can imagine how the Batman movies made me feel.
Hang on a sec, because the latest two Batman movies were the best. I like Christian Bale as Batman, and wish the previous ones in comparison, never existed.
According to the article I read, it was the movie studio or the production team that made the cut regarding Terrence. I don’t care what kind of problems you are having behind the scenes, keep the dude that people have already gotten used to and have developed a bond with! If the actor decides to split then that’s one thing, but just lay down the law and tell them where the line is, and not to cross it. Don Cheadle?
Don’t get me wrong though. Don Cheadle is an EXCELLENT actor. But I like the idea of watching my movies in order some late night whilst drinking large amounts of cold filtered beverages made of hops and barley. I don’t want to have to think about why Batman… Bruce Wayne rather, no longer has curly hair. Preposterous!
I’ll tell you what IS acceptable to me. Killing off a role due to that skank… I mean actress crosses the tracks and does a movie from a different comic. Like lets say you have an actor or actress playing the role of a well known super hero like one of the X-Men. Then that disrespectful person goes and plays a lead role in a DC comic’s movie like, oh I don’t know… Catwoman. I think Marvel got it right when they killed off Cyclops after he appeared in the Superman Returns movie as Lois Lane’s lover/husband-thing. Maybe it was already planned, I never read the first part of the Dark Phoenix story arc, but I stood up and cheered when she “swallowed his soul”. (That was for you Sam.)
Spider-Man 4 and 5 will be coming out too! That Sam Rami comment above reminded me! He and Toby Maguire will be working together again on those projects. Up in the air of course, and sticking with the theme of this blog is of course, will Kirsten Dunst be back!? Sam says he’d love to work with her again, but it all depends on if she’s written into the script. I can live with that. So long as they don’t fill her role with some other bimbo like America Ferrera… unless they plan on killing her off in the first several seconds of the movie that is. What?
So anyway, I just want to send a special shout out to my home boy Terrence Howard and to say that I would cast you as War Machine in a heart beat, and twice on Sunday. And to John Favreau, if you happen to read my blog: wake up man! Bring Terrence back!
