As-If

November 7, 2008 by Douglas · Leave a Comment

I’ve seen quite a few news articles online regarding Proposition 1000 here in Washington state regarding the “Right to Die”.  I noticed that it passed, which is why there seems to be such a media buzz about it.  Like Oregon, now you too can kill yourself after you consult two physicians, and are also deemed “in your right mind”.

Here’s a real shocker:  I saw the item on my ballot and my memory is fuzzy, but I either did not vote on this at all, or I voted NO.  I think I voted NO, that Washington state did not need this to enable those who really wanted to die, the means to a nice painless death by means of physician assistance or medical prescription.

You know if you try to kill yourself in general, they force you into a hospital and evaluate you for psycho-schematic… semantic… something… whatever.  But now you can say: “Yo, Doc, I am like in pain and stuff, and I would really like to just be dead already – instead of living for another month or five years and being a burden on my family.”  And if you can get enough people to sign on to your pity-party you too can knock yourself off!

This makes me wonder since so many life insurance policies these days prevent payment based on suicide, if this totally null and voids that, or if people who are willing to kill themselves because they are SUCH a burden on their family, this is even an issue.

I voted NO on this because it was simply something I didn’t think we needed a law on.  If you are going to kill yourself, you are going to kill yourself.  We don’t need some law or provision on the books stating that its okay under X circumstances to kill yourself and not feel bad about it.  Look numb nuts, its not the best choice.  I know you are in pain, and I am sorry, but we don’t need a law on the books in Washington state saying that you have a right to kill yourself.  If you wanna die, get a gun, or Drano or something.  I know it might not be painless… but trust me – it will only be painful for a short time.  How many people do you know who have taken a shot of Drano and lived?  Not many I am sure.

Now in the primaries, and preceding the primaries when these guys are hanging around the front of Wal-Mart and begging for signatures, I’d surely give them my signature.  I think that if you want to put something before the people to vote on, you should have that right.  I frequently sign off on things to put in front of the people even if I think it is retarded.  I mean, that’s how our government works, right?  You want to put up an initiative or proposition, you can!  Get the signatures and then get it on the ballot.  After the fact, if it seems to truly be idiotic, moronic, retarded… it fails and hey, at least you tried, right?

But apparently it passed, and you can now kill yourself in Washington State.  Congratulations!… douche-bag.
